On June 16, 2010 CHRC received a cashier's check in the amount of $1,000.00 from the immigration consultant.  Although there was no letter from the immigration consultant with the cashier's check, besides copies of the letters sent to her by CHRC, the cashier's check was made payable to the consumer.  Consumer was in Mexico visiting her husband when CHRC received the refund.  Consumer should be back in Woodland after June 21st, with a nice surprise waiting her in the amount of $1,000.00. (If there are consumers whom have paid immigration consultants or  notary publics hundreds of dollars for completing immigration forms, they may be entitled to a full refund.  Contact our office for assistance.)

  • As of May 4, 2010, a consumer in obtaining a refund of $1,000 paid to an immigration consultant (also a notary public) in Woodland, for the consumer's husband's immigration Consular Process.  The immigration consultant did not comply with the Business & Professions Code Section 22440-22448 requirements.  As such, consumer is entitled to a refund, and may be entitled to $1,000 per violation, which may amount to $5,000.  A few of the major requirements for immigration consultants are: Provide a written contract in English and in the language of the client; Inform client the right to rescind the contract within 72 hours; Post a surety bond in the amount of $50,000 with the Secretary of State; and conspicuously display in the office a notice of compliance with the bonding requirement.

  • As of August 2009, assisting a family in obtaining a refund from a major bank for unemployment insurance offered through their credit card.  Since the card holders are undocumented, they are not eligible for this benefit.  However, the bank customers were not aware of the requirement of having to qualify for unemplyment benefits through their state Employment Development Department.

Consumer went to small claims court and obtained a judgment for $2,000.00.  However, attorney appealed Judgment and consumer will be going back to small claims court on April 12th.  To be continued

  • August 10, 2009, a woman from Boston, MA, who contacted our office for help. Colonial Theatre Refurbishing Project Ends:

On March 27, 2010 the CHRC and the Colonial Theatre concluded thier partnership for the refurbishing of the Colonial Theatre in Sacramento, which began in 2006.  The refurbishing project also involved the Volunteer Center of Sacramento's Alternative Sentencing Program.  Hundreds of volunteers completed thousands of community service hours by helping refurbish the theatre and conducting minor theatre maintenance.  A few volunteers even commented on thier visits to the theatre as a child, which took place in the 1970s and 1980s.  Great memories indeed!

CHRC also had the opportunity to operate the concession stand during the course of the project.  The operation of the concession stand provided CHRC with valuable experience in catering to customers in an entertainment venue.  Much was learned from this experience by all board members and volunteers-  hats off to anyone running a small business!  Funds were also generated during the course of this project by CHRC.  These funds went back into the agency to assist with monthly operating expenses.

CHRC and Sheraton Hotel Go Green!

CHRC and the Sheraton Hotel in Sacramento go Green by recycling over 600 Sheraton Hotel staff blazers, housekeeper uniforms, shirts and pants during the months of February and March 2010.  Community individuals, Hiram Johnson High School Clothes Closet and the Oak Park Clothes Closet were the beneficiaries of these fine clothes.  The majority of the items were in excellent or good condition.

Thank you Sheraton Hotel for sparing the environment of good and useful clothes, and for allowing CHRC to coordinate the distribution these fine items.

High School Community Service Senior Project

CHRC  participated in the High School Community Senior Project with Luther Burbank High School.  The project allowed Sandra Espinoza to complete 15 hours (Sandra completed 20 hours!) of community service at CHRC from February 10 through March 6, 2010.  Sandra assisted CHRC with general office duties, verification of volunteer timesheets, updating agency Quicken financial reports, translations of legal documents, and utilizing her bilingual skills (English/Spanish) with our agency clients.

CHRC would like to thank Luther Burbank High School and Sandra Espinoza for selecting CHRC for this senior project.

Good luck Sandra!

Summer Youth Program
